‘Agreed to Stay in Touch’: Jaishankar Meets Rubio Amid India-US Tensions (Social Media)

Jaishankar Meets Rubio: Amid rising tensions between India and the US over trade, tariffs, and H-1B visas in recent weeks, a crucial meeting of the two countries' foreign ministers took place in New York on Monday. While the two sides did not publicly share details of the meeting, it is expected that several key issues, including trade agreements, potential restrictions on the Chabahar port, and H-1B visas for Indian professionals, were discussed.

Agreement on Priority Issues

The meeting decided to continue discussions on priority issues between the two countries. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met with US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor. This meeting came after heightened tensions over the past few weeks, which saw differences on several issues, including the 25 percent additional tariff.

Jaishankar said after the meeting, "I had a very good meeting with Secretary Rubio. We discussed everything from bilateral issues to the international situation. We agreed to maintain a continuous dialogue to progress on priority areas. We will remain in touch."

Jaishankar's Visit to the US

Jaishankar arrived in the US on Sunday evening to participate in the United Nations General Assembly. He will deliver India's address at the General Assembly on September 27th. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also met at the Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting in Washington in July. The stalled trade agreement talks are also set to resume, for which Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is traveling to the US.

Impact of Trump Administration Decisions

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has taken several decisions impacting India's interests. These include the decision to place the Chabahar Port in Iran under sanctions and new H-1B visa rules. Experts believe that the new visa rules will have the greatest impact on Indian professionals.

However, the two countries indicated in the meeting that dialogue would continue to balance bilateral relations and resolve primary issues. The meeting took place at a time when there was tension between the two countries on issues like business differences and H-1B visas.
